Arbitrary Waveform Generator
Arbitrary Waveform Generator
D.E.V.I.C.E. is an encyclopedia of terms used by manufacturers of test and measurement equipment. T&M Atlantic created this service to better explain the functionality of instruments it offers, and to highlight the latest developments in the world of measurement equipment. We are using such tools as animation to bring words and pictures to life and to create not just an understanding but also an appreciation for technology that goes into the design of every instrument.

As a rule arbitrary waveform generator is a sort of function generator capable of generating arbitrary waveforms. The majority of modern arbitrary waveform generators use direct digital synthesis (DDS) to generate an output signal, i.e. they are digital. Moreover they have embedded memory to save signal fragments or complete signals, specify the amplitude and repeating intervals as well as the beginning and the end of a signal display, parameters. Such generator type is very handy due to its feature to generate the signal which has been previously saved into the memory of a digital storage oscilloscope. That improves the performance in troubleshooting processes.
In some cases such generators are built into oscilloscopes.
See AWG-4150 as an example of arbitrary waveform generator.
