Introduction of the first microwave oven for home use
D.E.V.I.C.E. is an encyclopedia of terms used by manufacturers of test and measurement equipment. T&M Atlantic created this service to better explain the functionality of instruments it offers, and to highlight the latest developments in the world of measurement equipment. We are using such tools as animation to bring words and pictures to life and to create not just an understanding but also an appreciation for technology that goes into the design of every instrument.

On October 25, 1955 Tappan Company for the first time introduced a domestic microwave oven weighing about 60 kg.
Actually
the first microwave oven was developed by the American scientist Percy Spencer
in 1947 and initially it was supplied exclusively for the needs of the American
army. The
very first device was completely different from what we have now at home. The
weight of the oven was 340 kilograms and it was used to defrost semi-finished
products. Each
chef who worked with this oven had to pass special exam and training before
using it.
