Record number of planes in the sky

On May 26, 2023, FlightRadar captured a stunning record: over 22,000 airplanes were in the sky at the same time, carrying around 5 million passengers. That means every 1,600th person on the planet was airborne!

Imagine if all of them coughed in unison — we might have created atmospheric turbulence ourselves.

And if they all chose chicken over pasta — global poultry supplies could’ve taken a hit.

One air traffic controller joked: "Feels like the sky threw a party and forgot to invite us!"

Satellites recorded an unusual spike in Wi-Fi networks named: "SkyNet," "FlyingWifi," "PleaseConnect," and "Seat 27B."

Record number of planes in the sky

Unconfirmed stats from that moment:

  • 18,000 people waiting for the lavatory
  • 2,000 kids discovering turbulence the hard way
  • 1,000 passengers still trying to open their tray tables
  • And at least one passenger clapping for a landing — before takeoff.
